Problem Statement (PICOT)
The PICOT statement is one of the most effective methods to analyze the healthcare issue, develop a new healthcare intervention to address the issue and compare the proposed intervention with the expected outcomes and timeline (Luijendijk, 2021). Identifying the issue helps researchers understand its significance and impact on the targeted population. For this research, the PICOT statement is “How delirium can be treated in elderly patients with atypical antipsychotics and self-care management in comparison to typical antipsychotics in six months?”. So, the population is elderly patients, the proposed intervention is atypical antipsychotics and self-care management, a comparison is typical antipsychotics, the outcome is treating delirium and the time is six months.
Delirium is a healthcare condition that is known as the confused mental state of an individual. Delirium is a common healthcare issue in elderly patients(>=65 years old) and occurs all of a sudden (Clevelandclinic, 2020). The patient needs effective care and instant hospitalization because of being distracted and disoriented act (Clevelandclinic, 2020). It is necessary to treat a patient who is having delirium to improve their quality of life and well-being. Atypical antipsychotics (sulpiride, ziprasidone, benzodiazepines, thiazoles) are used for the treatment of delirium because these medicines have an 80-85% effect on the patients’ health. In comparison with typical antipsychotics (haloperidol, quetiapine, risperidone) the atypical drugs are highly beneficial in bringing healthcare outcomes (Morris, 2020).

PART 1: Problem Statement
Need Statement
The program for health promotion is effective in educating people to modify their lifestyles to prevent the higher risk of chronic diseases such as delirium. To treat delirium patients’ nurses can play a vital role in educating patients about adopting a new and healthy lifestyle and using self-care management strategies (Francis & Young, 2021). Nurses can do health promotion because they are first-line healthcare service providers. Nurses can make a professional empathetic relationship with the patient and their families that can help them in trusting healthcare providers’ suggestions. Nurses need to analyze patients’ mental states, acceptance capacity, and knowledge about the risks of delirium.
Nurses can promote healthcare interventions comprehensively with patients and their families by showing research that supports lifestyle modification and atypical antipsychotics for delirium treatment (Gual et al., 2020). Nurses can offer healthcare policies and insurance that offer lifestyle modification programs for elderly patients’ healthcare. For quality improvement, the care coordination plan is highly effective in that interdisciplinary healthcare teams will provide care to a patient with a delirium diagnosis with the use of cost-effective healthcare programs and technologies.
An interdisciplinary team can offer an integrated healthcare plan in which doctors will prescribe atypical antipsychotics, nurses will educate patients on self-care management (regular exercise, rehabilitation, good diet, social activities, mindfulness practice) and adhere to medical consultation, and therapists and encourage patients to shape their self-care priorities according to their mental state (Gual et al., 2020). Also, the interdisciplinary team can provide remote care to the patient with the use of telehealth or telemedicine which will improve care quality.
For the prevention of the high risks of delirium, nurses can offer remote care and home care. In the early diagnosis of delirium patients need constant monitoring, so nurses can offer telehealth services in which patient vitals and healthcare conditions will be shared with the care provider in real-time. The interdisciplinary team can encourage patients to self-care management to prevent acute delirium. Furthermore, nurses can enhance patients’ buy-in for self-care management and atypical antipsychotic use for treatment by providing detailed education to the patients. Nurses can guide patients and their families about the use of telehealth/telemedicine to access remote care (Francis & Young, 2021).
Population and Setting
The targeted population for delirium treatment is elderly people. In elderly people, the condition can occur within hours and can get extreme within days. Any i
