Since the onset of the rapid growth of the evidence-based practice, various healthcare organizations have embraced it to various degrees and supported its applications. While some of the organizations are directly involved in the directed implementation of EBP, others support it through various strategies (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). One of such organizations is the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The American Society of Clinical Oncology is a body that represents physicians involved in every oncology sub-specialties and cares for patients with cancer. The healthcare organization operates several initiatives such as charities, where it has awarded funds and grants to various researchers in several countries (American Society of Oncology, 2021). Besides, it has other useful resources such as patient information is one of its websites, Cancer.Net.
From the organization’s website, the evidence-based practice appears under cancer research located at the policy issues and statements tab. The organization supports evidence-based practice in various ways, and in supporting its mission statement of advancing cancer research, the organization offers guidance on the strategies that can be used to effectively improve access to evidence-based clinical trials (American Society of Oncology, 2021). Besides, based on the organization’s several policy statements on cancer research, it states its intention of boosting the evidence base (Sikka, Morath, & Leape, 2015) for offering treatment of older people with cancer. Even though there is no clear proof that the organization’s work is grounded in EBP, there is evidence that the organization supports EBP through funding cancer research and broadening the base for cancer treatments. The information I have found on the website changed my perception of the healthcare organization. For instance, while I already knew that the organization was formed by oncology physicians and supports cancer research through funding, I have come to realize that the organization also supports patients by providing information about cancer and providing guidance on the strategies that can be used to effectively improve access to evidence-based clinical trials.
