Introduction
Good afternoon everyone, I am _______, a senior nurse at Joseph Health Community Center and I hope all of you are well. Thank you to all of you for sparing your valuable time for this session. Today I am going to present a health promotion plan to you all. To answer any kind of queries, I have kept a Q&A session at the end of our session so keep your curious question with you till the end. But before I start presenting the topic for today, I would like you all to brief me on your introduction so I get to know my audience.
For this purpose, I have introductory questionnaires with me which I will disseminate among you all to fill out. This introductory questionnaire covers the questions related to each individual’s personality such as your name, gender, age, educational qualification, hobbies, employment status, etc., and sections where all of you will fill in information according to your personal learning needs related to our topic of discussion which is cessation of tobacco products. Now that you all have got done with this introductory activity, let’s jump to our topic.
Health Promotion Plan – Cessation of Tobacco Products
The topic for my presentation is based on developing a health promotion plan for the cessation of tobacco products. These tobacco products can be in the form of smoking cigarettes, electronic vaping, hookah, and chewable tobacco. Tobacco use in any form is dangerous for the human body as it affects almost all organs including the lungs, heart, blood vessels, eyes, mouth, digestive organs, bladder, and reproductive organs (National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, 2022). The most common manifestation of using tobacco products in terms of morbidities is lung cancer.
Other than lung cancer, heart diseases, stroke, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are some of the diseases caused by tobacco consumption. There is an increased risk of the development of tuberculosis, eye diseases, and disorders related to the immune system as a result of tobacco use. About 28.3 million U.S. adults consume tobacco in the form of cigarettes and approximately 4.7 million middle and high school students engage in utilizing at least one tobacco product, including e-vape. Almost 1600 U.S adolescents smoke their first cigarette every day (CDC, 2023).

These stats show the emergence of this dangerous act of consuming tobacco products in our communities and reflect the health condition of our young generation. Profound use of tobacco products can cause dependent on medical care treatments due to deterioration of health. In America, the annual cost of medical care treatment for smoking-related diseases in adults is more than $225 billion. In Colorado, about 12% of adults consume tobacco in the form of smoking cigarettes and 18.9 % of high school youth used tobacco in the form of other tobacco products including e-cigarettes (CDC,2023).
Therefore, there is a need for tobacco product cessation and quitting programs to promote health in our community members and to enhance the economy of the community that falls as a result of extensive costs incurred on medical treatments. Some of you might be engaged as well in the consumption of any of such tobacco products. This is why, I have developed this session of health promotion plan designed to tailor all your related needs and to ease your tobacco cessation journey.
The Plan Based on Specific, Identified Health Needs and Goals
Considering the health consequences and stats of the utilization of tobacco products, it is important to develop a health promotion plan on the basis of identified health needs and goals specific to all participants. There are various evidence-based health plans for tobacco cessation interventions. One of the plans can be implementing 5A’s intervention method. It consists of Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange sections.
The “Ask” component is about engaging participants to identify their use of tobacco, frequency, and willingness to quit using tobacco products. This step is followed by advising all individuals to quit using tobacco products. In the next part, an assessment of their needs and willingness to quit tobacco use is done which is followed by assisting in sorting preferable ways to quit tobacco use. Lastly, the arrangement is for monitoring the cessation interventions and their effectiveness in follow-up meetings (Chai et al., 2018).
Some other community-based health plans to promote cessation of tobacco products can be educational campaigns with the help of mass media, raising prices for tobacco products, school-based tobacco prevention programs to find social factors that promote tobacco use and educate them on reducing them,
