Nurses are often understood in providing bedside services but their roles in influencing leadership and equity are less understood. Essentially, as an advanced registered nurse, I play critical roles in ensuring quality care services to all patients (Huston, 2013). Nurses spend the longest period with patients and therefore are better placed in advocating for equality during services. This entails equity in the provision of patient education to address the aspect of self-care. Nursing practice standards require the professionals to offer care by considering safety to patients. This also entails the provision of health services without bias to all patient population.

In my practice as an advanced nurse in critical care, I find it right to advocate for equitable distribution of services to patients. However, equitable population health among a given target population also relies on organizational policies on patient care. Existing structures on quality care to all patients ensure that nurses do not engage in service delivery that is skewed towards a selected racial group or people from a given social class (Masters, 2018). Moreover, as an advanced nurse leader, my role will also entail the formulation of practice standards in an organization to motivate the team towards providing quality care without bias. In other words, an advanced registered nurse needs to be a champion for change to encourage general nurses on the need to practice fairness in health procedures.

Nurse leaders play a critical role in championing for patient advocacy. However, in my practice as an advanced registered nurse, challenges are innumerable especially as I champion for population advocacy (Masters, 2018). Mainly, the challenge arises from ineffective systems of operations in a health facility that does not guarantee equality to all patients. The premise instills a culture of bias among nurses as they will emulate what the organization practices (Huston, 2013). Ideally, an organization that fails to sensitize its staff on the aspect of equality in care is likely to experience high rates of prejudice which in overall, affects the patient population seeking services with the facility.
